The whooping cough epidemic in California has claimed nine lives, all infants, and the Department of Public Health reports 4,017 cases through Sept. 14. Texas has the second highest number of whooping cough cased, followed by Ohio and Michigan. New York State, outside of New York City, has the second highest percentage change from 2009 after California. The Centers for Disease Control report this data weekly and the latest report is for week 36, ending Sept. 11, 2010.
Whooping cough, or pertussis, is a concern nationally, but it is not the only disease outbreak making recent news.
